Ladies on the Lake is the newest addition to our KBI Gives Back initiative, which started in 2015.

How it all got started…

My beautiful friend and fellow angler wife, Leanne Wheatstone, had planned to donate her hair for wig-making and asked me if I’d like to join her.  Like so many of us, my life has been pretty profoundly affected by cancer. Of course I agreed!  When I presented the idea to my KBI Board members, our amazing team came up with the idea that became Ladies on the Lake.  That first year, we decided that we wanted to support local cancer patients by making our donation to Lake of the Woods Hospital Foundation – Forms of Hope. This fund allows Kenora cancer patients to access up to $500 to help pay for things that aren’t covered by OHIP, like WIGS.  Coincidentally, my mom was diagnosed with breast cancer on KBI weekend that year.

Go big or go home!

Our community got behind our event like we knew they would! We had 28 local vendors selling their wares under the tent in exchange for donations,  and I was very humbled by the number of people who wanted to collect donations and donate their hair with Leanne and I.  The stylists at Shear Heaven Salon offered to come and do the cuts on stage, and then invited us all back up to the salon to have proper haircuts that night! Nancy from Nancy’s on the Lake loaned all of our Ladies Hair Donors a beautiful outfit so that we could come back to the tent looking like a million bucks after donating our hair. At the end of the weekend, we were able to present the Hospital Foundation with $6,200 and sent off 9 ponytails of at least 10 inches to be made into wigs.  Please visit if you’d like to donate to this amazing fund.

New year, new event, new ideas

We decided that we want to mix it up, and try new and different ideas every year to keep things fresh and interesting for our community. In 2016 we partnered with lululemon and Karla Treadway to offer Karma yoga under the tent which was so fun! We also had 5 young ladies (+2 moms!) who wanted to donate their hair for wigs – 2 of the donors had NEVER had a hair cut!  Since we had so many youngsters involved this year, we decided to donate their hair to an organization in BC who makes and DONATES wigs to children battling cancer in the Children’s Hospital.  Please visit for more info.

Canada 150 and ONTour

In 2017, Kenora was selected as an OnTour location and KBI and the Whitecap Pavilion was the venue for some great Canadian free music to celebrate our 150th anniversary.  Because our team of Directors had so much extra going on this year with the bands and the additional stage set up, we decided to keep our Ladies Event simple.  We partnered with the Hospital Foundation and the Kenora Dragontamers to do a weekend of 50/50 draws, and donated all funds raised to Forms of Hope.  Please visit or to get involved or make a donation.

For this year’s event, we have decided to make our Ladies event a TRUE ladies night on Friday!  We have once again partnered with Karla Treadway to offer a great yoga class, and we are so thankful to the Kenora Legion for very generously donating their huge space for the class.  We need to fill it up, so gather up all your girls and come down for a great night!! After the class, all of our participants will head back down to the tent to enjoy some yummy snacks, a couple of beverages and dance the night away with our rockin’ band.

Again, always looking for new ways to give back, Ladies on the Lake will be supporting the GoFundMe for Leighton Bracken. Leighton and her family are Kenora summer residents who found out in March of this year that 3 year old Leighton has Stage 4 Neuroblastoma. Your $50 ticket will buy you a great yoga class, food, 2 drinks and LIVE MUSIC.  Please talk to all your girlfriends, sisters, moms, aunties, grannies, nieces, cousins, school friends, bandmates (you get the idea) and come have a great night under the tent.  All funds raised will be donated to the Bracken Family.
